Stroke is the third leading cause of death in England each year, accounting for 10% of deaths (more than 45,000). The brain damage caused by strokes means that they are the largest cause of adult disability in the UK. However, a fast response to symptoms can reduce the risk of death and disability.
The ‘Act FAST’ campaign was launched to enable members of the public to recognise and identify the main symptoms of stroke, and to generate awareness that it needs to be treated as an emergency. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to reduce the amount of time between a stroke occurring and an individual’s arrival at hospital which in turn should reduce the level of death and disability resulting from stroke.
