Drinking Sensibly…Why is it important?

National charity Alcohol Concern suggest around 90% of the UK population drink alcohol – the majority drink at lower risk levels – but more people are drinking at higher risk.

The Department of Health, in 2008, reported that alcohol misuse use is associated with 1 million hospital admissions each year and 17 million days off work.

 

Know your Units – New Department of Health Guidelines – January 2016

The Department of Health issued new guidelines on Friday 8th January 2016 aimed at reducing risks to health through alcohol consumption. The new guidelines advise:

  • Men and women not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week
  • Spreading your drinking over three days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week
  • Not saving up units and drinking them all in one go
  • Ensure you have alcohol-free days
  • No level of alcohol is safe to drink in pregnancy

It is easy to lose track of units consumed and they all add up

Some helpful Tips…

  • Try to have 1 or 2 alcohol free days each week
  • Try not to binge drink (men who drink 8 or more units in one session, and women who drink 6 or more units in one session)
  • If you have drunk too much allow at least 48 hours for body to recover
